TB-21398 Returning to Duty

Post by kayelbe » Mon Jan 31, 2022 6:27 pm

I had sold off my Biker Scout costume a couple years ago and went into retirement. Never fully stayed away as I lurked the various 501st boards.

Got the bug to get back into the action, and I've been cobbling together a new Scout since about November.

Patience is the key to the game, though, and I've made a few mistakes. My intention was to 3D print the armor on my little Creality Ender3 Pro. This required cutting the larger pieces down in the slicer and then assembling them. This added a lot of work over just buying a new fan-made kit, but I wanted to see if I could pull it off, and possibly even finish it well enough to be the first 3D printed Lancer.

Alas, some of the parts just weren't working out right and I ended up gathering together some SC pieces to complete the build.

Here's my list of components:
Helmet: 3D Print from Jesus Salmeron's files
Chest/Back/Belt: SC
Shoulders/Biceps/Forearms/Knees/Thermal Detonator: 3D Printed from MrPoopie's files

Flight Suit: DIY from RedKap coveralls and real suede from Tandy Leather
Vest: CucBlack
Cummerbund/Cod: DIY
Boots: DIY with Crowprops replica Sierra sole boot bases
Gloves: Wampawear
Balaclaba: UnderArmor

Blaster: 3D Printed from Mr Poopie's files

I hurriedly finished it up hoping to get reinstated before the Membership DB got locked for elections, and did a photoshoot. My daughter helped me dress out and we took a million pics. Unfortunately, I wasn't happy with some of the fit and the paint job on the helmet. I'm holding off submitting the shots until after elections (and a new paint job/soft goods alterations), but here's an action shot I took to show my progress (or lack thereof):

Dude! So happy to see you getting back in to it! I owe you a lot for taking me under your wing on my very first troop in the 501st at Starfighters. Looking forward to seeing you get this finished and back on the speeder bike!

Well, stuff happens.
I’m still slowly plugging away, but I’ve abandoned the 3D prints. I couldn’t keep the pieces from cracking from the many rivets needed in the various parts, so I ordered a full kit from SC and wow! They completely redid their molds since my circa 2015 kit! The most noticeable changes are in the chest and back. The armor now has nice return edges and the back tank is longer and more screen accurate.

I’m modifying my flight suit as well since I didn’t like the way I did the thigh patches.

There’s a few troops coming up that I want to be part of so my deadline is set. Keep an eye here for more progress shots!

Man, it's done for the most part but I got a glue mark on my helmet that I need to figure out how to fix. I tried 3d printing the helmet but couldn't get it sanded/filled to where I liked it. So, I bought a New Image Props helmet. When it arrived, the visor had separated from the faceplate so I had to glue it. As I was finishing up I noticed the glue drip and when I tried to wipe it up the glue mostly came off but so did some paint.

Almost there...

Well I can finally say I'm done.

I submitted my re-approval photos tonight. Had a wardrobe malfunction (the not-NSFW kind). My right shoulder of the chest/back popped up for some reason and nobody caught it until I was uploading the pics. Hopefully it will be considered a "dressing issue" and won't hold up the approval.

Here's my "action shot":
